them as important

6: Structure, academic writing, formatting, spelling/grammar comprehension of the topic (5)
• Use the following hints and tips to score well:
▪ Signpost what you are writing about with headings and subheading. This means the
reader doesn’t have to work out your thought process. It is presented for him.
▪ Academic writing has a formal style. However, you are writing about yourself, so it
should be written in the first person, not the third person. Use the example essays to
guide your stylistic development.
▪ Format, format, format! Make sure your margins, line-spaces, title sizes, fonts etc.
are consistent throughout your essay. Use the document defaults to help you get this
correct. Playing around with styles is a recipe for disaster.
▪ Spell-check and grammar check. Both Word and Google Docs have options to help
you.
Academic Referencing (5)
• It is crazy to lose marks for referencing badly. APIC uses the APA referencing format. If you
are using Google Docs, download the Add-On EasyBib Bibliography and learn to use it. It will
ensure your referencing is correct.
• Reference at least 5, preferably 10, academic sources. If you write a literature review in later
project assignments, that should be 10-20 references. The quality of the essay is always in
question if there are not enough references.
