Also note that this post has more info about writing multiple-choice questions than what’s in the ebook.

Jeff, I think you’ll find the information you need in Chapter Four, Negotiating Payment.

And thanks for buying the ebook!

I’ve enjoyed reading your e-book. As I am preparing for my first contact with a publisher, I realize that I do not have a good handle on both the timing and pricing out of a project.

Hypothetically, let’s say I have a 500 pg textbook (15 chapters) for which I am asked to create (for each chapter): 20 multiple choice + 3 matching + 5 True-False + 5 short answer

The publisher might also want to know how much I charge for doing
powerpoint presentation (for each chapter) and Student study guide.

I do not find this information in your e-book, so I’d appreciate some feedback about your rates and expected time to complete such a project.

thanks,
Jeff

That’s always frustrating J’aime. Many teachers write their own questions, and quite often they do a very poor job of it.

He used to violate #20 all the time. I hated taking his tests. You had to guess which answer he thought was the most right, of the two that could be right, depending on how you looked at things… ARG.

Jenn, you’re absolutely right: many of these tips are very important for creating effective surveys. I’m surprised that so many polls and surveys are poorly written without adequate thought. If you don’t ask good questions, you won’t get reliable data.

I’ll have to keep keep these in mind while developing questions for my e-course quizzes. 🙂

There are also some good tips in here for people creating survey questions. So many of them are poorly-created to bring about certain results. I’d love to see your take at some point on how some of these things could be directly incorporated into survey development. 🙂

Steeny, some teachers and profs write their own questions. However, they usually have access to a “bank” of test questions provided by the publisher of the textbook they use for the class.

It is definitely quite common, and I’ve been earning a good living for over two decades doing this and similar projects for textbook publishers.

For those interested in this line of work, see my ebook “Writing College Textbook Supplements.”

How common is this as a job? Can one actually earn a living at it?
